STEM Careers Coalition

Challenge
Started as a concept on a napkin by Corporate Education Partnerships team, STEM Careers Coalition launched within 6 months on national STEM Day, September 2019. The STEM Careers Coalition addresses the STEM workforce and inspiration gap by bridging industry and classrooms at unprecedented scale.

My Contributions

As a Senior UX Designer, I collaborated with a wide range of team members to establish the information architecture and organization model that would allow the program to scale to the 6.7 million teachers and students reach it has today. Over the course of 5 years, the program grew from a single landing page to an engaging platform that hosts live events, career video profiles and student career resources. I wore multiple hats while on the project from wireframe prototypes, high-fidelity visual concepts to workshops, print layout and design.

Young Scientist Challenge

Discovery Education and 3M created the Young Scientist Lab to provide students from every background with a direct connection to the power of problem-solving. Students tackle real-world challenges that are important to them with hands-on learning tools aligned to education standards, plus the nation’s premier middle school science challenge.

Challenge

How do you create and experience that leverages the established brand and identity of the program while creating a system that supports an annual challenge and support materials for the classroom?
Solution

As the lead User Experience Designer on the project for over 5+ years, I was able to learn and grow with the core values of the program. As the program grew we iterated approaches and refined the organization model to meet end user needs based on research sessions and feedback loops. I provided the information architecture of the content strategy and advised on the branding re-alignment. I presented the concepts to the client and managed feedback refinements from multiple perspectives. I collaborated with a cross-functional team to ensure quality and check-ins to expedite time to market.

FutureLab+

As a Senior UX Designer at Discovery Education, I collaborated with a wide range of stakeholders, engineers, product managers, designers and curriculum leads to bring the project to life. Futurelab+, powered by Genentech, connects students and teachers from all communities to the future of biotechnology through virtual and in-person learning resources.

Challenge

How do you create a modular design system that allows for resource development over the course of five years?
Solution

Leveraging UX principals (Usable, Desireable, Adoptable, Valuable and Delightful) we were able to create a structure that would enable growth over the 5+ years. We held multiple research sessions (micro and macro) to validate and refine our approach to best meet educator and student needs. My role was most focused on the information architecture, user experience, user research and content strategy while supporting the visual and animation when needed.
